School supplies that are dangerous to children’s health

Every mother is keen to secure her child from any risks he may face while he is at school, but do not expect that the tools he uses may pose a threat to his health.

Therefore, it is important to be careful in choosing sanitary ware through some specifications that must be taken into account while purchasing these utensils.

Here is a list of tools that can be dangerous to a child’s health.

1- Backpack

It is recommended to avoid bags that contain vinyl, PVC, plastic No. 3, or shiny backpacks in addition to the letter V, as they are usually made of vinyl, lead, and large amounts of phthalates, which increase the chances of developing chest allergies, diabetes, obesity, and endocrine disorders.

When choosing a school bag, you should choose one made of natural fibers such as cotton, or synthetic fibers such as nylon or polyester, instead of the materials we mentioned earlier.

2- Plastic food containers

There are still many plastic food containers made of vinyl that contain phthalates.

These chemicals increase the flexibility of the plastic and thus make it easier to shape and create various shapes for these containers.

These substances cause asthma, low IQ in the child, problems in the development of the reproductive system that affect future reproduction, as well as diabetes.

As phthalates can enter the child’s body through foods that are placed inside this container, it is therefore recommended to choose containers made of plastic No. 5.

3- Bottles of water

Some companies still use lead in the manufacture of water bottles even after knowing the harm of lead to health, as it causes growth problems, anemia, and affects the health of the heart and blood vessels.

These bottles are made of chemicals that leak into the water with repeated use of the bottles, and when they accumulate in the body, they lead to many health problems, because they are not eligible for reuse.

This applies to various plastic bottles made of hazardous materials such as phthalates.

That is why it is recommended to choose a healthy and safe water bottle, which has the number 5 written on it, as it is the best and safest type of plastic.

4- Metal rings in folders

The grommets that connect sheets or folders are usually made of phthalates, and a child may be at risk for putting their hand in their mouth after holding these grommets.

Therefore, it is recommended to choose folders that contain binders made of safe materials, such as wood or safe plastics.

It can be confirmed by searching for the codes listed in those blogs, and avoiding any product that contains the number 3 or the letter V.

5- Papers and notebooks

It is preferable to choose paper materials that have been recycled without the use of chlorine gas, which is used to make the paper bright white.

Therefore, paper products marked with PCF are treated without chlorine, made from recycled materials, and bleached without the use of chlorine.

Also, TCF paper products are completely chlorine-free but are not made from recycled materials.

6- Crayons Crayons

Some types of crayons contain asbestos, a substance that has many health risks and can harm the lung and cause cancer, especially lung cancer.

This substance has been banned internationally, but some Arab countries still use it for its cheap price, and therefore the use it by children exposes them to grave dangers.

Check for the ACMI AP Label, which indicates that the materials used to make these pens are non-toxic.

If you do not find this label, you should look for the phrase “children’s product certificate” which indicates that this product has passed security standards testing.

In order for the child to be away from the dangers of these materials, it is recommended to choose pens made of 100% pure, natural, non-toxic wax.

7- Markers

Some companies use hazardous and carcinogenic substances in the manufacture of markers, which cause cancer and disorders of kidney and liver function.

The gasoline in these pens can cause short-term breathing problems and lead to dizziness, headaches, and drowsiness.

Like crayons, it is recommended to look for types marked with AP or “children’s product certificate”.

8- Drawing and coloring supplies

Do not use any coloring matter that has a CL warning label, as this indicates that it contains harmful ingredients.

It is preferable to choose products that have the label AP any approved, CP any safety certified products or HL any health products.

But these stickers do not guarantee that they are completely free of harmful chemicals, so the child must be careful when using them.

The child should also wash his hands well after using these tools and before eating.
