Swimming has many benefits for the child and he should start going into the pool early, but with caution and attention to some things so as not to pose a threat to his health.
Baby descending into the pool: Be careful of these things
It is a good thing to start introducing the child to water at an early age, in order for them to get used to it and in preparation for teaching them swimming, which is one of the most important sports beneficial to the child’s health and bodybuilding.
There is no medical rule about the appropriate age to accompany the baby in the pool, and this is what you can determine according to his health condition and his response to the matter. There are mothers who put the baby in the water while he is in the first months of his life and before he completes the first year.
But before you take the child to the pool, you must pay attention to some things so that it does not become a danger to his health and life.
1- Preparing the child
It is preferable to wait until the child defecates first, then clean the diaper area well and take him to the swimming pool, and choose the type of diaper designated for the descent of water if he is still wearing a diaper.
And make sure not to stay in the water for long periods so that the child does not urinate or defecate while he is in the water without you realizing it.
If the child is more than two years old and has stopped wearing a diaper, you should make sure that he does not need to urinate or defecate before disembarking and ask him to tell you if he has a need to go to the bathroom while he is in the pool.
To avoid sunburn on the skin of the infant, the appropriate type of sunscreen can be used, but the doctor must be consulted first to find out the best product for the infant’s skin because his skin at this stage is very sensitive.
2- Swimming and breastfeeding
If the child is a baby, he should not drop the water immediately after feeding, and he should wait at least an hour until he does not vomit.
This also applies to a child who has started eating, as it is not permissible to drop the water after eating.
3- Pool temperature
Before you take your baby to the pool, you must make sure that the temperature of the pool is not lower than 30 degrees Celsius, because if it drops below this, the child will lose his temperature quickly, and he may develop hypothermia, which occurs due to a decrease in body temperature below the normal rate.
If you notice that the child is trembling and his lips have turned blue, you should take him out of the water immediately, dry his entire body, and wear dry clothes.
4- The gradual descent of the child
The child should not go into the pool for more than 10 minutes in the first time of this new experience, and the duration can be increased after 3 to 4 times to become 20 minutes, and after several times increase the duration to 30 minutes.
However, it is not recommended to keep a child under a year in the water for more than this period.
5- Do not swallow water
One of the important things to keep in mind while your baby is in the pool is not to swallow the water.
This is because swimming pool water is subject to pollution as a result of many adults and children descending into it, and this water that contains chemicals can cause a lack of sodium in the blood or cause poisoning, especially since his stomach cannot bear any bacteria or viruses at this young age.
6- Not coming down during illness
Avoid taking your little one into the water if he is sick, even if it is a minor illness, as this may cause the disease to worsen.
Diseases include respiratory infections, high temperature, ear infections and skin infections, as well as stomach cramps and digestive problems.
It also prevents a child with diarrhea from disembarking so as not to spread parasites in the water that can harm others in the pool.
7- Child insurance
The mother must accompany her infant and hold him well, and do not leave him in the swimming float alone because he is still small and this float can expose him to problems such as water entering his nose.
Even if the swimming pool is for young children, it is not permissible to stay away from the child at all while he is in the water.
8- Drying and bathing the baby
Immediately after leaving the pool, the child’s body must be dried well, and his hair also if exposed to water, and do not leave it for a while in swimwear, but must be replaced with dry clothes.
It also requires bathing the child to rid his body of the chemicals he was exposed to while he was in the water.
These chemicals that are placed to sterilize the water can cause eye and skin infections in the child, especially since his skin is thin and cannot be tolerated.
Also, these materials do not mean that the swimming pool is 100% clean and disinfected, so some bacteria that cause many skin problems can be transmitted to the child’s skin.
